This was a really sweet post. As a writer who's starting out, I feel the absence of a Joe in my life. While everyone is very kind about what I'm doing, I don't have anyone who encourages the "spark within." This seems especially important to know because one day I'll be able to provide that for someone, motivated by my current yearning.
One of the best pieces on friendship I have ever read. I have a friend like Joe. His name is Tom. He exhorts me to get off my butt when need be. On the other hand, he is my strong defender when I am wronged. Not only that, he is a role model as to how to live life. For example, he just got his Masters at the age of 75. Thanks for writing about your friendship.
Jeff, it is beautiful to my heart to feel the shift in you. Whatever you are doing, it's potent. Keep shining.

I’m still looking for a writer friend like that. Many close calls, but nothing like that. I’m glad to hear it happens.
