Great post. Thank you. I had to pause on this: "Where we live and who we surround ourselves with, in large part, determines who we become. Which is why we ought to be careful." I've heard we become the average of the five people we spend the most time with. It's essential to choose wisely those people who will inspire us to recognize our potential and then act. Thanks again.
This post is featured on my Substack feed. I probably read it in July but it really hit home today. Lots of great quotable material here. I loved the “connect people TO one another” idea. It’s something I have tried to do much of my life. I am less interested in becoming a “star” and more primed to help others become a success. And you know what? Others have done this for ME!
An awesome read for me. I took so much from this, especially at this point on my own journey. Here are the key take-aways that I'll be applying to myself in the coming weeks:
-“But they were curious enough to try, and sometimes that’s all you need to make the impossible happen.”
-“Whatever opportunity they lacked, they created for themselves.”
-“ try putting yourself in places where the work you want to do is already happening.”
-“Do something to stand out from everyone else who is waiting to be noticed.”
I love this! Thank you so much for sharing! I loved reading it. It was so well written too. Thank you for sharing the information about the Bronte family and the sisters.
I have been thinking a lot recently about writing and place, so this feels especially relevant. I recently thought again about how much I want to write in Italy, and how I FEEL and the stories I feel when I am there. This past weekend, our family drove through Caledon, Ontario, and it felt so good to be among rolling fields, with nature being free. I love that about Caledon and, again, it makes me feel connected to writing.
Jeff I can't thank you enough for introducing me to Richard's work. I somehow hadn't come across it yet, but I'm obsessed with the importance of place and the other topics he discusses.
Quitting my corporate job in the U.S. and moving to Barcelona five years ago was single handedly one of the best decisions of my life. This was when I realized how much our physical surroundings contribute to our everyday happiness and well-being.
Just picked up a copy of your book, looking forward to diving in!
I'm glad to be reminded of your inspiring book, which I read years ago when it came out. I love that your formula for creating your "it" place involves two of what I consider the four essential connections of the #HeartspokenLife: Connection with Others and Connection with Self. In my own writing, I keep coming back to one or more of these connections.

I'm so glad, Emma!
